Acne treatment Basics
Effective acne control results from practical fundamental measures aimed at keeping the pores unclogged, opening infected pores, reducing the inflammatory processes and eliminating bacteria which eventually ensures safe acne treatment.
Acne treatment Basics involves getting rid of acne lesions or preventing recurrence,a fact which posits that:
- therapy can be individualized since causes are multi-factorial
- time is needed for acne or acne scars resolution
- lifestyle modifications may be required: weight loss, exercise, stress reduction, dieting, alcohol reduction for holistic acne treatment.
- A dermatologist may be required.
Acne skin care products are broadly classified in 3 categories:
- Preventive or general skin care products
- Over-the-counter,specialised acne skin care products
- On-prescription skin care products
Basic measures like routine gentle facial wash with soap and water prevents clogging of pores effective in facial acne treatment.Be wary of abrasive soap, astringents, facial scrubs, toners and masks because of their tendency to irritate skin rendering it vulnerable to acne eruptions or breakouts. In turn irritated skin may lead to facial acne scars,is poorly receptive to basic acne treatment and acne medications.Benzoyl peroxide used solely or in combination with other products clears the skin with mild drying.
Exfoliating removes dead cells from the skin surface which otherwise can clog the pores of extremely oily glands resulting in acne breakouts.Exfoliating results in a smoother, softer and healthy-looking skin but should be discontinued if side-effects occur and the attention of a Dermatologist sought as a measure for safe acne treatment.Certain exfoliating products that contain Azelaic acid and sulphur have both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties thereby reducing redness, swelling eventual acne breakouts and acne scars. These products should first be used sparingly on the face to ascertain suitability and possible side effects before liberal application.Known skin care products like cleansers and make-up removers also limit sebum production and clogging of pores.
Other specialised skin products include alpha hydroxy acid-based moisturizers, vanishing creams and those that contain benzoly peroxide and salicylic acid because of their antibacterial properties. An inital low concentration eg 5% benzoyl peroxide is advisable to determine skin conformity and suitability.
Where results are unsatisfactory after 6-8weeks,see your dermatologist for possible On-prescription acne skin care products, hormonal therapy, combined chemotherapy and minor skin procedures like laser therapy and dermabrasion. It is advisable not to squeeze the pustules because they lead to acne facial scars and more breakouts.
